There is a new movement sweeping the nation and it’s not for the lighthearted. It is a subgenre called Trap Music and it is comes to us straight from the dirty south. Now it is not a new movement per se, but it is fresh to the world of electronic dance music aficionados. Now let me take you to the laboratory. If we were to build a trap song, we would pull elements from both dubstep and moombahton, slap on some 808’s, hi-hats, kick drums and some sharp snare lines. And boom! As it turns out, Champaign-Urbana IL is home to way more than Big 10 Sports teams and sticky-floored campus bars. This is for all of us 80s and 90s kids who grew up on the Power Rangers, N64, and rap.  In this day in age we have progressed far and beyond those days and have indulged ourselves in a world of Xbox, Justin Bieber (…er), and trap music.

Trap music has very recently become a rapidly spreading epidemic, such that it has even found those with Avicii/Afrojack/Guetta eardrums to be infected.  From its exploding 808s, to its crisp hi-hats and snares, it can be most easily described to what I find as a fusion of hip-hop, house, and dub.  Trap is growing so fast in popularity that even Felix Cartal put in his 2 cents:
